Japan has been one of my favorite places to explore, and in the last 4 years I had visited the country for three time, for tourism (2015), attending a Japanese wedding (2017) and spiritual pilgrimage (2019).
Since the Japanese embassy has made it easier for Filipinos in getting the Japanese visa (please read my other post about how to get the tourist visa), so an increasing number of Filipinos visiting the land of the rising sun can be noticed. So if you are one of those preparing for a trip to Japan and wondering if you need to purchase a JRPASS, this article is for you.
What is a JRPASS?

JRPASS is short for Japan Rail Pass,it allows the foreign tourist (must have a tourist/temporary visa to purchase this) to train travel for long distances around Japan in the most cost effective and efficient way. This pass offers an unlimited rides of JR trains, buses, ferries and bullet trains for consecutive 7 days,14 days and 21 days options.

Updated rates of JRPASS starting October 1 ,2019
Ordinary type :
7 consecutive days : 29,650 yen
14 consecutive days : 47,250 yen
21 consecutive days : 60,450 yen
Where to purchase the JRPASS?
You can either purchase it through online or your travel agent, although personally I would prefer purchasing it online since they sell it at the lower price and you can use a credit card in ordering it which both equates to both time and money savings. I ordered our last JRPASS here

It will depend on where you go and how long will you stay in Japan. If you are only planning to stay in one city like to Tokyo I will say you don't need to have a JRPASS, but if you are travelling for different cities and in long distances , it is definitely worth having it.
Sample calculations if you are arriving in Tokyo- visiting Osaka-Kyoto- leaving from Tokyo :

The above calculations is only covering the bullet trains ride , you can add the local trains that are also free and you will see more savings, please also note that if you have a JRPASS you will save time in getting your ticket from the machine.
In the end it is best to plan your travel schedules ahead and try to make a sample computations.
